We welcome candidates who can contribute to the excellence of our academic community.DescriptionJob Description: Division Director, Palliative MedicineThe Department of Family and Preventive Medicine at Emory University School of Medicine invites applications for the leadership position of Division Director for the Division of Palliative Medicine.The Division Director for Palliative Medicine plays a pivotal role in advancing the academic mission of the Division, encompassing education, research, and faculty development, while maintaining a close collaborative relationship with the Director of the Emory Palliative Care Center (EPCC). The clinical and academic missions within Palliative Medicine are distinct but interconnected, necessitating seamless coordination to ensure excellence in both domains.Key ResponsibilitiesAcademic Leadership

  • Advocate for the Division through collegial and consultative leadership, driving innovation in education, fostering research excellence, and supporting strategic growth initiatives.
  • Supervise Division faculty, conducting annual career conferences and performance reports, and providing mentorship to faculty and trainees, including fellows in Palliative Medicine.
  • Collaborate with the Department Chair, Vice Chairs, and other leaders within the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine on strategic planning initiatives.
  • Promote and support professional development and empowerment at all levels within the Division.
  • Ensure the Division's contributions to the Department's academic and research goals align with institutional priorities.
  • Represent the Division within Emory University's academic and clinical leadership structures.Collaboration with the Emory Palliative Care Center and its Director
  • Maintain an essential collaborative relationship with the EPCC Director to ensure alignment such that academic and clinical missions can be accomplished by all faculty.
  • Coordinate with the EPCC Director on strategic initiatives, faculty development plans, and resource allocation to support both the Division and the Center.
  • Support the academic development of all faculty, including those whose clinical duties are aligned with the EPCC, working jointly with the EPCC Director and relevant Department Chairs.
  • Participate in joint initiatives that bridge the Division's academic priorities with the Center's clinical operations and quality improvement efforts.Educational and Research Excellence
  • Lead the Division's efforts to innovate and advance education in Palliative Medicine, including partnership with others in the division who are responsible for undergraduate medical education, residency, fellowship, and continuing medical education.
  • Foster a robust research portfolio within the Division, promoting interdisciplinary collaboration and securing funding for studies addressing key aspects of Palliative Medicine.
  • Serve as a mentor and advisor to faculty and trainees engaged in research activities.Operational Responsibilities
  • Oversee faculty recruitment, retention, and career progression within the Division.
  • Convene regular Division meetings to facilitate communication, strategic planning, and faculty engagement.
  • Ensure compliance with institutional policies and standards.QualificationsEligible candidates must have board certification in hospice and palliative medicine or demonstration of an academic focus within the field and be eligible to hold a regular faculty appointment in the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine or a closely related field. They must demonstrate a record of accomplishment in education, research, and/or clinical care within Palliative Medicine or a related discipline. Exceptional leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills are essential.Relationships and Reporting StructureThe Division Director reports directly to the Chair of the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine. For clinical matters and initiatives impacting the EPCC, the Division Director must work closely and collaboratively with the EPCC Director, ensuring a unified approach to advancing Palliative Medicine across Emory University and its affiliated entities.This dual-focused leadership role offers a unique opportunity to shape the future of Palliative Medicine at Emory, enhancing its impact on patients, trainees, and the broader academic and clinical community.
